Dear Agencies & Publishers,
We need diverse books more than ever, particularly #ownvoices stories. Thus we have created the first-ever MG and YA Rainbow Writers Workshop, to be held at the wonderful Writing Barn in Austin, Texas. (More information!)
This weekend-long intensive will connect up-and-coming LGBTQIAP+ writers with authors and publishing professionals, giving them the tools to launch careers and add to the expanding canon of #ownvoices kidlit.
We are working hard to raise scholarship funds so writers from all backgrounds, marginalized identities, and income levels can attend. We Need Diverse Books has generously offered to collect scholarship donations, so they will be tax deductible.
The cost of a full scholarship is $1,400. If you fund a full scholarship, it will bear your name and we will sing your praises! Half scholarships ($700) will bear the names of two contributors. Quarter scholarships ($350) will have listed donors. We are taking donations in any amount—all donations will help launch the careers of LGBTQIAP+ writers!
To donate, go to We Need Divers Books Donation Page. IMPORTANT: After you enter the donation amount, type: “For the Rainbow Writers Scholarship Fund” in the comments box.
Thank you for your time—and for supporting diverse authors!

Amy Rose and I are thrilled to announce our RAINBOW WRITERS RETREAT at the glorious Writing Barn in Austin, TX!
You might remember that back in 2015 we raised over 15k to send boxes of inclusive fiction across the US. This year we are turning to fellow LGBTQIAP writers with a special workshop weekend in which we will be able to talk craft, representation and publishing in a safe, understanding environment.
We are honored to have Dystel, Goderich & Bourret VP and agent Jim McCarthy in attendance.
If you’re a rainbow writer looking to take their career to the next level (published or unpublished), we’d love for you to apply! If you’re an ally, it would mean a lot to us if you helped get the word out!
Much love & cheers for a future full of #ownvoices LGBTQIAP fiction for children and teens!
Cori & Amy Rose
Truly honored by this write up about Amy Rose and my Rainbow Box campaign! Here’s a peak:
“The authors hope that libraries receiving Rainbow Boxes will place the titles into general circulation rather than highlighting them as special reads to show that these books are also meant for readers beyond the LGBTQIA community”. – Sydney Jarrard
This is my big brother in Latvia!
My post on my personal reasons for launching the Rainbow Boxes campaign!
“We all know that books teach understanding and empathy and uniqueness and validity. They show you someone else. They show you yourself. They prove that we all have things to learn, things to unlearn, and most importantly, that we all have very unique reasons to love and be loved.”
Fellow YA author (and my bestbestbest friend) Amy Rose Capetta and I were inspired by the We Need Diverse Books campaign. We have launched a charitable initiative to bring inclusive fiction to more bookshelves in America. Please help via shares and donations! Every single dollar goes toward buying books!
